The sari festival at Joy Alukkas Wedding Centre is a feast for the eyes and a treat for sari shoppers

SIX -YARD WONDER The Spotlight collection is modelled evey evening for a fortnight at the showroom

What makes Kochi the undisputable sari citadel of Kerala? Fabulous sari promotions in the sari stores of the city are just one of the reasons. The ongoing sari festival, `Spotlight' at the Joy Alukkas Wedding Centre will leave you bedazzled at the range and the sheer beauty of the saris on show. Three floors of the nine-storied store are devoted to saris, the colours and collection of which are simply breathtaking.

With original designs, colour schemes, weaves, fabrics, blends and contemporary trends, the five in-house styles of saris on show are a virtual ode to the traditional six yards and the Wedding Centre has done it in style. Eight models from Bangalore will flaunt the five sari brands: Ek Thaara, Rajkothi, Madhubani, Nihaar and White Weddings, daily for a fortnight. The fashion show will be held every evening between 5 and 7.30 pm. And this sari extravaganza is sure to leave you wrapped in wonder and delight.

Saris branded

Crepes, georgettes and chiffons with scalloped borders and all over fine embroidery form the Ek Thaara brand. Sequins, beads, rhinestones, gold, silver, copper threads and wire work are crafted into Kashmiri, Lucknowi and Parsi (gara) embroidery. The colours are rich, deep and ethnic. Rusts, oranges and pied the saris range between Rs.2, 000 to Rs.15, 000. The overall look is stunning regality.

Rajkothi saris, as the name suggests, have Mughal style embroidery done by craftsmen in Rajkot.

The fabric is pure Kanchipuram, which makes them rich, heavy and pure trousseau pieces. The mix of two north and south Indian styles lends this brand an exclusivity that's a must for any sari wardrobe. In deep south silk colours the saris are priced around Rs.30, 000 upwards.

Nihaar saris are bright tie and dye in crepes, bubble chiffons, synthetic georgettes and range from Rs.6,0000 to Rs.15,000. Madhubani saris are on Kanchipuram brocade combining the Banarasi with the Kanchipuram. On raw silks they have fine detailed embroidery with pearls, beads, heavy zardosi work and borders with kundan stones. The saris spell elegance.

Finally the White Weddings collection is bridal and in tonal shades with bronze, gold and silver embroidery on crepes, organza, tissue, Kanchipurams and net. The saris have beads, stones, wirework and even Swarovski crystals and come at a range of Rs.2, 000 to Rs.45, 000.

The Spotlight ensemble literally turns the sari into poetry, with elegant fine detailing, exclusivity of embroidery patterns and with very high quality `karigari' or workmanship. The burst of colours is overwhelming. "Wow!" is the spontaneous response as the eyes revel in the quality, colours, range and texture of the collection. Says Vinod Paul, Marketing manager of the store; "The spotlight is a 15-day campaign to introduce the five in house sari brands." Explaining the behind the scene work to bring out this fabulous collection, says Vinod Kumar, Textile Manager, "we source silk yarn from China and give it to the weavers. Our design department is constantly introducing new colours and styles that are contemporary. The master weaver is explained the design and the colour schemes and that's why such an exclusive and with the times range."

And as the charming models walk the ramp and showcase these beautiful five brands you have Amrita, Simla and Geetha among the many other polite store hostesses to display the saris.
