Alluring handicrafts
SHOPPING An array of handloom and handicrafts on display PHOTO: K.R. DEEPAK
Indian handloom and handicrafts continue to charm one and all by their beauty, intricacy and uniqueness and the sheer variety of the art forms. The yards of handloom woven by the modest weaver has a universal appeal with the urban populace.
The exhibition-cum-sale of Lepakshi at Viswapriya Function Hall has brought with it the myriad hues of handlooms and handicrafts from across the country. The exhibition reflects the dexterity, creativity and imaginative skills of the artisans.
Each item, be it the traditional terracotta potware or the famous Sahranpur wooden artefact, reflects craftsmanship and aesthetics. The delicately crafted woodwork from Saharanpur can grace your table or a corner. An interesting item on display is the coconut shell artefacts from Pondicherry shaped in interesting themes. The cost ranges from Rs.50 to Rs.300. From Kondapalli, apart from the nodding dolls, the intricately detailed natural figures depicting different trades and the simplicity of village life are wonderful buys.
There is a fascinating collection of handlooms here. For the ensemble, check out the sarees and dress material from Mangalagiri, Chirala and Pochampalli ranging from Rs.250 onwards and a blinding array of tops, skirts, chaniya cholis, sheets, curtains and cushion covers.
An array of junk jewellery is on display right at the entrance. Check out the trendy but ethnic jute neckwear and earrings.
More innovation awaits visitors in the form of jute and shell artefacts, wall hangings in avant garde shapes but featuring traditional motifs. You can also choose from a variety of jute bags and pouches in all sizes. The exhibition is on from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. till Sunday.
