Sea fresh

If you love sea food, drop in at New Mubarak

DELICACIES FROM THE OCEAN: Wide choice

The ambience is nothing much to write about. It is clean but functional. But if you love sea food, this is the place in the city where you can devour as much fish as you can without making a dent in your pocket.

New Mubarak is tucked away in a corner of a narrow lane at Statue. Lunchtime is a blur of activities as the place is crowded with office-goers, politicians and students.

Meals are served on a plantain leaf with two vegetables, tapioca and pickle. You have to serve yourselves the fish curry or rasam placed on some of the tables. The usual `sambar' or `dal' is conspicuous by its absence.

You can choose your fish fry from a variety of fishes, which includes seer fish, pomfret, pearlspot, Malabar trevally (para), shellfish, squid and anchovy (neytholi). Or else opt for the various fish curries.

We ordered prawn fry and prawn masala too. While the prawn was fried just right and was very succulent, the prawn masala was a bit too spicy.

Next we went for shellfish fry, which was tasty but not too fresh. The pomfret fry was served piping hot, garnished with onions.

Prawn biriyani and seer fish biriyani are also available, but was sold out by late afternoon. Another speciality is the crab masala. This is served either with the shell or just the meat.

For dinner

For dinner, the fare is quite different. As the fishes procured in the day are sold out by afternoon, we settled for crabs and shell fish. You can ask for very soft pathiri, parotta or oratti to go with the various dishes. The crab masala was delicious but the shell fish fry was a disappointment.

If you love fish pickles, pick up the prawn pickle or fish pickle in convenient packs of 300 gm, 500 gm or 750 gm.

If you plan to go with your family, take a parcel.

Wallet factor

The meal costs Rs.20 with a variety of fishes priced anywhere between Rs.25 and Rs. 75 per plate. The briyanis cost Rs.40 and Rs.50 each and pathiri and orati are certainly a bargain at Rs.2 per piece.
