Designing jewellery is her forte

Designing for me is a God-given talent Asha
Well, if her claim to fame is that celebrities wear her custom made jewellery then the list is definitely star-studded. So if you have Mammooty's daughter bejewelled with her creations for her wedding reception then it is ditto for Rajanikant's daughter and for Mrs. Parvana Narain Karthikeyan. And soon you will see Mohanlal, in his new release Udayon, sport a locket also made by this jewellery designer from Pala.
Asha Sebastian designs customised jewellery and her foray into the field was quite by accident.
Disillusioned by the limited range of jewellery designs available in the stores, when she was assembling her trousseau, Asha Sebastian chose to design her own wedding jewellery. Twenty-two years ago the young bride-to-be gave shape to her imagination and fancy for that very special day of her life. That the creations designed by her caught the eye of the guests helped her move up in the field but it was a happy coincidence that she married into the Mattathil family who were also into jewellery. So it was a perfect fit for the young designer. " Designing comes to me easily. I have no formal training in it. It is as I always say a God given talent. I don't need to be inspired by anything in particular to design. I just close my eyes and thousands of shapes, colours, patterns float in my mind," says Asha whose collection is an attractive mix of delicate designs, colour combinations and lightweight ornaments. Perhaps the most distinctive feature about her designs is their rich look with minimum gold usage. This makes the pieces highly affordable. So we have from old, antique style big rings to Rajasthani style jhumkas, minakari style chokers, western style necklaces in truly interesting designs. A square shape necklace is a good example of Asha's originality. "The young don't like too much of gold jewellery. They want something different that is not found in the stores. I use less of gold and more of gems. I combine it with rare shades of enamels, which make the pieces very colourful. You can match them with your clothes," she tells you. Jewellery for babies is her latest venture. Here she makes good use of childlike motifs like strawberries, apples and bright colours fusing them in pearls, enamels and small stones. From what began 22 years ago, with a temporary lull to attend to her family, Asha's jewellery design has today come of age. Recently having done a course from the Gemmological Institute of America, she is presently teaching jewellery designing at Assumption College, Changnaserry. Asha plans to conduct a yearlong course in the subject. An easy alternative, which she gives her clients, is designs on paper, which they can get, crafted elsewhere. So if you desire something different, something easy for your pocket and something that will have all eyes on you then you can definitely go for one of Asha Sebastian's exclusive designs.
