BUSY AT work on a hot summer day all that you wish for is a nice cool break. A break that offers you some good food, tangy coolers and an ambience that takes you away from the cacophony of city traffic.
Step into the `Tabs'. A restaurant tucked away in the basement of Tabs complex at Cantonment. It is not new to city foodies but the joint tries to remain new in its outlook, constantly experimenting with new menu while keeping the old favourites always available for its valued and regular customers.
Indian, Chinese, Continental and Tandoori are the food fare here. But ask anybody their favourite. And `Tangri kabab' scores the highest. Made of three thigh pieces all cooked in a dash of tandoori masala with yoghurt makes the day for many.
Simply delicious, many finger-licking regulars will vouch. The Tabs is one of the few restaurants in the city that offers chicken lollipop, another a hot favourite. The dish consists of mainly chicken wings cooked in chicken masala using special sauces and powdered bread crumbs fried in oil.
Trend setter
The restaurant-in-charge David Peniel shares with pride that most of his chefs are trained in Chennai and set a trend in the city making special variety of dishes. He reveals his dedicated panel of customers also includes students from other parts of the country and lots of officials who just love to dig into the non-vegetarian variety.
Tabs also provides outdoor catering within a limited radius. It has also expanded its rooftop for seekers on special occasions for parties and get-togethers. From the varied menu, Chinese food is a speciality at Tabs offering fried rice, chopsuey and sauces of different kinds. The Beijing fried rice, Yung Chow, platter and jade prawns and the Peking fish are some of the dishes that make for a sumptuous feast.
Range of soups
As appetizers, the restaurant lines up a range of soups such as the dragon chicken soup, hot-pot chicken egg drop soup and seafood thick soup, besides the tom-yum, Lung Fung, Japanese Rice bowl and tan-pan soups. Among the other non-vegetarian dishes, the restaurant specialises in the dragon chicken a dish comprising boneless chicken prepared in schezhwan and garlic sauce and garnished with spring onions. The beef preparations are also quite elaborate. Roasted and Tachio tenderloins besides the ones cooked in schezhwan style, hot garlic and ginger onion sauce are quite popular with the customers.
For vegetarians, `Yameen' is offered as a starter. This speciality dish is all about crispy fried vegetables that simply crunch and melt inside the mouth. Indian specialities include the murgh, gosht and Anda biriyanis and the sweet Kashmiri pulaos, gosht Roganjosh, murgh malai tikka -- a thick, white, non-spicy, chicken gravy. Different types of raithas and salads including the crisp schezwan made of chopped vegetables, crispy noodles and the Russian salads complete the menu. Chicken Mayonnaise made of Mayonnaise sauce is much sought after. "We are set to launch an exclusive Chettinad dish haunt soon," reveals Mr. David. It only means food lovers can look forward to more palate sizzling stuff in the coming months.
