Megastar Chiranjeevi's daughter, Sushmitha's signature line is a symphony of minimalist design

LIKE EVERY dutiful child, Sushmitha helps her dad. There is a little difference though. Her father is the megastar Chiranjeevi, and she has designed his clothes for super blockbusters like Indra and Shankardada MBBS. Her courses in fashion designing in the city and London has bourn fruition with Dela, a design studio and a signature line.
There is a certain mind-set associated to filmi fashion. Think filmi and you assume the clothes would be bright and flamboyant, basically for a 70 mm template. Stepping into Dela, however, makes for a different experience with the crisp cottons and minimalist lines soothing the eye and calming the mind.
"I have used only natural fabrics," Sushmitha explains. "There are no synthetics - only cottons, silks and linen." There are sets as well as the smartest kurtis teamed with a flirtatious stole that can be teamed with jeans for the ultimate haute cool look.
The sets have either churidars or parallels and look super smart. A summery look with fabric paints on whites with self-design look absolutely gorgeous. Sushmitha feels her strength lies in her skirts at the moment and the range is lovely - from vividly coloured gypsy skirts embellished with cowrie shells to an elegant crushed silk skirt with brocade pleats, there is an embarrassment of riches.
Tops come in pleated yokes and the reversibles can make you feel like Superman as you could just as easily shift from one persona to the other.
The prints are interesting from summery flowers to Worli art done according to Sushmitha by "a Malayali artist doing a Maharashtrian art form in Andhra Pradesh." Is that national integration or what?
There is also a limited range of saris in Mangalagiri and other handloom. The small section of men's clothes according to Sushmitha "is to say I do design for men."
Sushmitha, believes very strongly in "customising. Even if I pick up an outfit from some big designer I would like to give it a touch of my own. I also design for individual clients. I sit with them and work out what looks good on them, what they are comfortable with and give them something they have never worn before."
Sushmitha who has designed the studio as well with the classy and quaint whispering from each artfully decorated nook and cranny is looking at designing cushion covers and other home furnishings in the future. The darling range of masks designed by Amit Khanna that who dig masks should definitely have a look at.
Getting the clothes on the rack is a tough job as Sushmitha explains, "It is not as if I get the clothes from somewhere. Each design has to be created and executed. Sometimes a design comes in a snap and at others you have to really work on it."
At the rate at which the clothes are flying off the racks, Sushmitha just might have to get back to the drawing board sooner than she expected!
