Dhoni cleared to play but Parthiv to keep

Chennai (PTI): Mahendra Singh Dhoni, skipper of the Chennai Super Kings will play on Wednesday but Parthiv Patel would don the keeper's gloves when the side hosts Bangalore Royal Challengers in the Indian Premier League here.

Chennai coach Kepler Wessels said Dhoni, nursing a finger injury, has been cleared to play on Wednesday but the management was against taking any risk.

"Dhoni will play against the Bangalore team. He has been ruled fit but he will not keep the wickets," Wessels said.

"Dhoni will definitely play but he may not keep. We are keeping options open and will assess his condition on Wednesday," Wessels said.

Dhoni had injured his finger during the previous game against Kolkata Knight Riders and Patel had to substitute him behind the wickets.

Though the Royal Challengers are expected to be easy meat for the hosts, Wessels said, "They are still a dangerous side and we will not take them lightly. They have nothing to lose, so that will make them more determined. Hence, we are not under-estimating them. We will assess the situation and announce the playing eleven."

Though the hosts seem cruising to the semifinals, Wessels said winning remaining three games were important for them.

"We have three games left and they are all significant for us. We cannot be complacent," he said.

Wessels dismissed the notion that Twenty20 was essentially youngsters' game and the ageing Bangalore side posed no serious threat at all.

"It is all about fitness and agility and as long as you can perform, age does not come into the picture. Besides, the Challengers have some very good players," he said.
