    Elephants wander into police station

Siliguri-Jalpaiguri (PTI): Two elephants, separated from their herd, strayed into a police station in Jalpaiguri district giving the personnel there the fright of their lives.

Assistant sub-inspector of the Kalchini police station Bhabatos first noticed the elephants as they entered the premises after breaking down a wall on Friday.

A woman, Hamida Bibi, who ran a tea stall outside the police station, sank to the ground with hands folded in submission as the elephants swept past her into the premises.

The frightened policemen scurried for cover as elephants charged in, the offider-in-charge Gopal Halder told reporters.

Forest personnel, who had a camp nearby, rushed to the police station and fired seven rounds in the air and also burst crackers.

This made the elephants make an about turn and head for the Buxa Tiger Reserve.

Deputy director of the Buxa Tiger Project (West) Ashok Pratap Singh told newsmen that the elephants had been separated from their herd and strayed into the police station and had meant no harm.
