Dhumal to get 'Golden Peacock Award'
Shimla (PTI): Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal would be bestowed the "Golden Peacock Award" in recognition of his initiatives to control environmental pollution, official sources said on Sunday.
Dhumal would be honoured with the award on May 30 at Palampur at Kangra district in the state at the opening ceremony of the global convention on climatic change, an official spokesman said.
Grand Jury of Golden Peacock Award under the chairmanship of Ola Ullsten, former Prime Minister of Sweden, has approved the name of Dhumal for the honour for "environmental leadership" for his outstanding initiatives, achievements and leadership in this area, the spokesman added.
He said HP has raised carbon credit issue at the national level drawing attention of the environmentalists towards the genuine demand of the state.
The European countries were compensating the least pollution generating countries with massive developmental funds and purchasing carbon credit certificates to maintain level of carbon in respective countries.
The spokesman said that HP government has taken effective measures to control industrial pollution and ban use of polythene bags to keep the environment clean.
