Ex-generals want Musharraf to vacate Army House

Islamabad (PTI): In a bid to embarrass President Pervez Musharraf, Pakistan's retired army generals, some of whom were groomed by him, are planning a long march to the Army House in Rawalpindi to press him to vacate the premises he continues to occupy despite doffing his uniform last year.

The former generals who will undertake a long march want the current army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani to move into the Army House. Musharraf quit the post of army chief in November last year but did not vacate Army House even after appointing Kayani as his successor.

The long march to ask Musharraf to vacate the Army House will be led by former army chief Mirza Aslam Beg and Gen (retd) Hamid Gul. Around 200 other retired army officers are also expected to attend the long march the date of which is yet to be announced.

The presence of Gen (retd) Ali Quli Khan in the rally would be watched with a lot of interest by many as he was not only the course mate of Musharraf, but once the main candidate for the slot of chief of army staff.

Quli had fallen victim to palace intrigues as PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif's personal bias against him had helped Musharraf to get the top slot. Another former officer Faiz Chishti is likely to attend the march.

Brig (retd) Mian Mohammad Mahmud said that the top retired army generals had decided to stage the long march. Brig Mahmud told the News that efforts are underway to bring together several army generals for the demonstration as this concerns the reputation of the Pakistan Army.
