  • Sri Lanka's ruling party wins eastern poll

    COLOMBO (Xinhua): Sri Lanka's ruling party led by President Mahinda Rajapakse has won the Eastern Provincial Council polls with 20 seats, the Department of Elections said Sunday.

    The department said on its official website that the main opposition United National Party secured 15 seats, the major left party JVP or the People's Liberation Front won one seat and the other seat was taken by Tamizh Democratic National Alliance.

    The Eastern Provincial Council election held on Saturday was the first such election in the Eastern Province for 20 years.
