A gathering in memory of a saint

K.C. ASOK

The 159th Thyagaraja Aradhana Festival saw many Carnatic artistes gathering to pay homage to the saint.

A number of Carnatic musicians turned up at Chembai Memorial Hall in Thiruvananthapuram to pay homage to Tygaraja.

The group, which included vocalists, flautists, violinists, mrindagom artistes and ghatom players, sang the Tygaraja pancharatna (five gems), kriti in ragas Natta, Gowla, Arabhi, Varali and Sri.

Two-day festival

Organised by Chembai Memorial Trust, on the occasion of the 159th Thyagarja Aradhana Festival, the two-day festival included two Carnatic concerts. On the first day, P. Ganesh began his Chitraveena concert with Navaragamalika varnam in Adi talam.

Then he rendered `Teliyaleru rama... ' in Denuka and `Nadha tanu nimisham' in Chittharanjini. Poorvikalyani (`Deva deva jagadeeswara... ') and the main raga for the evening, Kamboji (`Oranga sayi ... ') were handled with ease.

`Marukelara O Raghava... ' in Jayanthasree, and a bhajan in Sindubhairavi (`Visweswara darsan karu') were the other items presented.

S.R. Vinu on the violin and Udupi Balakrishnan with gentle strokes on his mridangam, gave ample support to the artiste.

Ganesh concluded his recital with a tillana in Behag composed by his guru, Ravi Kiran. The concluding day saw mass-rendering of pancharatna kritis in the morning and vocalist Pandalam Ganesh sang in the evening to the accompaniment of N.V. Babu Naryanan (violin) and Udupi Sreedhar (mridangam).
