A skin show
STEREOTYPED: Aashiq banaya Aapne.
Aashique Banaya Apne
Cast: Emraan Hashmi,
Tanushree Dutta, Sonu Sood.
Director: Aaditya Dutt
Storyline: A love triangle.
Bottomline: Moth-eaten saga.
Pedigree. It is no guarantee of class. Ask Aaditya Dutt, grandson of Anand Bakshi who makes his directorial debut with "Aashiq Banaya Aapne," and gives us enough evidence to prove he is no chip off the old block. His stop-start narration, his obsession with skin, his penchant for stereotypes... .all prove that the guy has many hard miles to cover.
Or ask Emraan Hashmi, Mahesh Bhatt's nephew, who, two years, half a dozen duds and a "Murder" later, still continues to simmer, simper, smooch and sulk. All with such mechanical ease that one would be forgiven for believing that a robot was at work! Yes, the stalls love him every time he is in a lip-lock - something he seems to have enough experience of, courtesy films like "Murder" and "Tumsa Nahin Dekha" - but it is when he opens his mouth to speak or uses his facial muscles to act that you look elsewhere.
Between them they reduce this nth love triangle to a moth-eaten saga that is quite a challenge for your patience if you have seen the likes of "Hawas" or "Murder" before. No, neither the men nor the lady is married here. But that does not deter them from doing what comes naturally in wedlock to most.
And they get ample support from Tanushree Dutta, who enters the Mallika Sherawat zone with her first shot at fame. A former beauty queen who is beautiful shoulders downward, she wears little.
Then a little less. Then nothing at all! Romance has become an excuse for skin show in Hindi films, and almost every new heroine is ready to give it all in her quest to get ahead of the pack. Change their names, their little clothes, actions and emotions, everything remains the same. Dutta is just the latest to join the bare-all brigade. As for the film, well, it has some nice music, and a song that is on everybody's lips. But not much beyond that.
Watch it if your idea of entertainment is a prolonged lovemaking sequence. Watch it if fresh talent means a girl who believes talent is skin-deep. Watch it if you believe the much-ignored Sonu Sood can pass as the second lead, or Emraan Hashmi can add an iota of dignity to his persona. The odds seem stacked up? Stay home.
